Wow. C. J. Box writes a fantastic novel with "In Plain Sight featuring Joe Pickett, Wyoming game warden. This book starts out with a bang and doesn't let you go until the very last word and then keeps you wanting more.Joe Pickett is an extraordinary game warden and goes by the book even though there are many things trying to make him go against it. And this is where he gets into trouble. As much as he is a good person that does the right thing, he gets himself into situations that where you either admire the guy or you just get exasperated with him. He does his best no matter what and always comes out on top even though it does not make him a popular person.
Joe's love of his family comes through in this book and the storyline is tightly woven with twists and turns and unexpected characters from the past thrown in that push Joe to his limit.
I highly recommend this book to others to read but, it is good as a standalone novel, but read the series. It is awesome!!

A return to form for C.J. Box and Joe Pickett.
A twisted story centering on a dark and dysfunctional Wyoming ranching family whose fate entwines with Joe and his family.
For the most part, I like the way Box weaves character threads from past Pickett novels into his latest stories.
The climax in these stories is almost always extremely violent, however, sometimes to the point of gratuitousness.
Still, a pretty satisfying conclusion this time. And a bit of a cliff-hanger in terms of Pickett's job status.
Can't wait to read the next one!
I have been devouring C.J. Box's "Joe Pickett" novels like crazy! In this particular novel Mr. Box goes for broke in the telling of a story about an old ranching family that established a vast empire consisting of thousands of acres of land in the 1800 hundreds.
The story begins unfolding in the present-day generation of three brothers, heirs of this huge empire of wealth, in a pasture and engaged in a deadly fight with each swinging shovels in an angry, violent, family fight. Nothing new to the local ranchers and citizens of Saddlestring, Wyoming. One brother who is the eldest and also an elected official of the state government, is the most dishonest, greediest and conniving of all. After their mother is reported missing by the family a search for her begins. It seems she has disappeared into thin air.
Joe Pickett is sent by his new director, Randy Pope, who has a strong build-up of animosity towards Joe to investigate into an alleged tip about Hank, one of the brothers, that his home is full of illegal trophies. The trouble for Joe begins instantly with the uncooperative Sheriff Kyle McLanahan and his dept.
A killer comes to Saddlestring to settle old scores which happen to also include Joe and his entire family. He is a man from the past who is ruthless and who instigates himself wherever he can to do his dirty work "in plain sight". He begins by terrorizing Joe's family and also the kidnapping of his two daughters. From here on out this story becomes extremely harrowing when Joe and good friend Nate Romanowski start the search for the girls. It will keep you turning pages and biting fingernails as the two friends commence a journey down a wild river during a terrible flood.
This is one of Mr. Box's best novels. His writing is so vivid that you can almost feel the currents of the river carry you along for the ride. I highly recommend this book, however it is not for the faint-hearted. It's quite graphic in the crime category. But buy the book, it's great.
The series continues....
Joe Pickett is back home with Marybeth and the girls. Against the backdrop of the Pickett parents dancing around the strains in their relationship unveiled by Joe's absence in Jackson, WY (the prior book), Joe is confronted with the disappearance of Opal Scarlett, curmudgeon and fabulously wealthy owner of a large, storied ranch that dominates the county.
Her disappearance and the war between two of her sons who are battling for control of the family empire draws Joe into an investigation with hidden agendas, family secrets, and divided loyalties among the good people of Saddlestring, many of whom who feel they must be with one Scarlett heir or the other.
In Plain Sight has a lot of plot twists and well developed and interesting characters. Joe's family is back as a major part of this story and as usual becomes intertwined in the case. Another good tale in the series.
I've read and plan to re-read the entire Joe Pickett series of novels. I'm so happy that I saw Lee Child's praise for C.J. Box, because surprisingly I hadn't heard of him until a little over a month ago when I picked up his latest Joe Pickett novel, a hard-back, "Off the Grid". I'm amazed that he hadn't shown up on my radar years ago, since he writes the kind of novels I love to read, i.e. action/suspense. Best of all, his writing style is crisp, straight-forward and logical; none of that psycho-babble self-analysis stuff, that I find usually breaks the continuity of story flow, while not adding much of value to character development. I urge new readers to start out with his first Joe Pickett novel, and then continue sequentially through all of them before reading "Off the Grid". This is NOT at all necessary to do. But, because of Box's rich development of the entire Pickett Family including his horses and dogs, as well as his vital secondary protagonist Nate Romanowski, plus his consistent carry-over of the life stories of the characters who play the numerous supporting roles used to enrich his stories, reading these books sequentially may also further enrich your appreciation for the strength and proficiency of Mr. Box..
He joins my list of go-to easy to read, creative and prolific authors who spin wonderful tales - Ted Bell, Lee Child, Clive Cussler, Tony Hillerman, James Rollins, Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child, Harold Coben, James Patterson, Daniel Silva, etc.
