Dr. Cray is a psychiatrist who kills people. Dr. Cray is also the smartest, most memorable, character I have read in years. His thought process is both deeply disturbing and brilliant. Does he get away with his latest murder? What about the girl who's stalking him? Who is she?The girl that just will not go away is suspected of having mental issues. So, does she? Why else would she stalk a suspected killer? She'd have to be somewhat crazy to do that, right? Oh, but wait. She has a story of her own. If only she were more street smart. How she does what she does is a little unbelievable, given her habit of getting herself caught. She miraculously escapes death a number of times. She's just too predictible. Certainly no real match for (a) Dr. Cray. Not in reality, anyway.
Yes, the fantasy ending is neat and ties up the story. I just don't like it.
Dr. Cray is the best part of this story. Just wish it had been a little more realistic.

I am an avid reader of political and police thrillers. Michael Prescott is a breath of fresh air in that each of his books so far is a completely different set of characters. That is not to say that I don't like writers like Baldacci, John Sanford, and Michael Connelly who have continuing characters thru their books I find Michael Prescott's books to be exciting and intriguing from start to finish with excellent endings. I always start with a writers first book and read in the order they were published until I have read the entire series. He is an excellent writer and I hardily recommend his books.
This is the second Michael Prescott novel I've read [the first one was Last Breath] and now I'm a fan for life. Stealing Faces was incredible; the most thrilling [and chilling] book I've encountered in awhile. It read like a race car......started off with break-neck speed, slowed down around the curve to gain momentum and then sped off to the finish. Wow! I found myself holding my breath as the cat & mouse chase began and at times I was so nervous with the action, I had to put the book down.
The characters were exposed beautifully; Kaylie's introduction after Cray's chilling kill, the climax of her escape from him in the desert, the introduction of sheriff Shepherd & Kaylie's father-in-law Anson, the exposure of Kaylie's reasons for killing Justin; all woven into the story skillfully. The cold-hearted demeanor of Cray compared to the manic personality of Kaylie, both of them obsessed for different reasons. The hunt, the chase, the escape, the finale......brilliant!
This was an enjoyable read and worthy of reading again. Thank you Mr. Prescott.
STEALING FACES is my first outing with Michael Prescott. I was looking for a good story that wouldn't break the bank at the end of the summer. I figured the inexpensive entry price meant being able to bail if I wasn't enjoying the story. Not even an issue.
The villain, John Cray, is a slick and vicious killer. He kidnaps women and then sets them loose so he can stalk and slaughter them. And unlike some serial killers he is able to fly under the radar since he is a doctor working at a facility that treats the insane. He knows how the system works and uses that knowledge to his full advantage.
But a former patient knows his secret and now his game of cat and mouse is being flipped around.
Not sure what I was expecting when I started STEALING FACES. What I got was a well told tale that kept me wrapped up in the story and the characters until the very end. I see that Mister Prescott has several other stories that are very reasonably priced in the store. Its a sure thing that I will be checking them out.
I've been reading and reviewing a fair amount of books this year, all of them quite good, and most of them on . Of course, I vet them before I accept a review request by reading the first few pages and the synopsis. There's nothing worse than reviewing a book that bores you to tears or that just isn't your cup of tea. So I almost always love the titles I accept.
In the midst of all these excellent books, however, came STEALING FACES. This high suspense thriller literally knocked my socks off.
Mr. Prescott's writing style is what hooked me from the beginning. Smooth, tight, and fast flowing, the prose held me as spellbound as the suspense. Frankly, STEALING FACES is one of the best-written novels I've come across in a very long time, and I can't believe I haven't discovered Mr. Prescott's work to date.
Cray has been stalking and killing women for over a decade. Well-respected by day, savage hunter by night, the man's character is impeccably drawn using inner thoughts and dialog. The contrast between his day job (revealed partway through the book) and his secret, sick obsession, accentuates his evil.
Now, meet protagonist Elizabeth Palmer. Desperate, broke, resourceful, and lovely, this woman has fixated on finding and bringing Cray to justice since she escaped his clutches twelve years earlier.
From the first primal scream of Cray's victim to the kaleidoscope of terror-filled memories experienced by Elizabeth, Prescott doesn't let his readers relax, or even take a breath. Both characters, juxtaposed brilliantly against each other, drive the story forward to its very satisfying conclusion.
The plot is well recounted in many of the 100 plus reviews on , so let it suffice for me to say that many plot threads and themes are tightly woven into this book, with shock after shock and absolutely no letting down of the tension. I would actually recommend STEALING FACES as a primer for those interested in pursuing a career in writing thrillers.
Thank you, Mr. Prescott, for showing us all how it should be done, and for several nights of delicious, exhilarating thrills.
Highly recommended by Aaron Paul Lazar.
