I was delighted to discover Dawns Early Light as a rediscovered classic. In 1943 on my first visit to the public library after turning 13, I was greeted by the typically dressed librarian of the day- long black skirt, white longsleeved high neck blouse, bun on the top of her head. She informed me that I now was eligible to read from the adult section of the library. She had chosen my first book for me and it was Dawns Early Light. Even in today's world, it is a wonderful selection to begin adult reading

Dawn Early Light The Williamsburg Novels Elswyth Thane 9780884119746 Books Reviews

My original review was to thank the publisher for giving these to us in version. My updated review is to say to the publisher that they should be ashamed of themselves for charging good money for these versions. All they did was scan one of the hard cover books and put it out as an electronic book. Obviously, not even a left-handed monkey took a stab at proofing them. should also be ashamed for selling these without having someone take a look at them - they're the ones that are putting their brand-name in danger. I read these books 40 years ago for the first time and have read them numerous times since. I have all of them in hard back. 20 years ago, I went to the author's publisher and purchased the 9 or 10 books that I didn't have, in hard back, library quality, for $20 to $25 each, and was happy to spend the money. What a shame that a new generation of readers won't be able to enjoy these wonderful books in electronic format because the publisher wanted to make a quick buck and ruined them.
This is the first book in one of my favorite series. I gave it 5 stars because I love the storyline so much. HOWEVER, this edition has one of the worst grammar/typing/spacing contents I have seen in a long time. I can read it because I have read the book several times before, so I can interpret the actual word meant from what is typed on the screen. THIS BOOK NEEDS A TOTAL OVERHAUL IN TYPE SETTINGS AND GRAMMAR. Believe me, the original version doesn't look anything like this one. Also, even though I can find the rest of the series on line at , all of them are listed as not available for purchase. I for one would really hope they become available ASAP. BUT PLEASE RE-EDIT THEM ALL FIRST IF THEY ARE LIKE THIS ONE. AND WHILE YOU'RE AT IT, PLEASE RE-DO THIS ONE TOO!!!
This warm account of the struggles of several fictional characters during the Revolutionary War time period brings to life the setting and the real-life people in a believable way. It's well written in an old-fashioned style, but if you can get over the writer's use of semi-colons and so forth, you'll be drawn in to the tale. Just be patient with the first few chapters; like many good books, it take several pages just to set the scene.
Colonial Williamsburg. Citizens taking sides, even splitting families--some loyal to the king, even though the Declaration of Independence has been signed. A young man arrives from London so his father can teach there, but the father dies on the way over. Now what? He becomes involved with the lives and troubles of townspeople. He ends up changing his loyalties, but he is quite dense about someone who has cared for him for years. His journal becomes a vehicle to dispense some of the history.
I love the series that Elswyth Thane wrote about. This is the first book in this series and it is one of my favorite series. I highly recommend not only this series, but all the books by Elswyth Thane. There are some very fascinating books. There is one that she wrote about living in a farm in New England during World War II (she couldn't go over there for research) and I found that book fascinating as well. Her books on George Washington, Queen Elizabeth I, and her other novels are worth the money. I'm not quite sure why these books haven't been reprinted, because they are well written, well researched, and enjoyable.
I was given "Dawn's Early Light" by my mother when I was 9. It was her copy, appropriated from the library where she'd worked for many years. I hated romance and was all about history - this book has both. In fact, she told me that her brother loved the books and learned most of what he learned about the Revolutionary War from reading them, not from the history texts. The romance is handled deftly, however, such that it has remained one of my favorite love stories, as well as one of my favorite historical novels.

One word about the re-editions, however These books were written in the 1940's and 1950's, so there is really not a lot of explicit language. However, the Buccaneer editors apparently decided that what little language there was had to be cleaned up. I'm really not sure why. Rest assured that Julian and St John actually do swear now and then, and when they did, Thane included it. That's the only complaint I have about the reissues, and it only seems to be "Dawn's Early Light" that is affected. I still have my mother's copy and reread it about every year or two.
I have been looking for Elswythe Thane's Williamsburg books for years so was excited to find a few on . Dawn's Early Light is a favorite but the text was almost unreadable, Where a word contained a double " l" (like willow or wall) a capitol U was used. This kind is weird print was on every page like one of those strange paragraphs found on Facebook that says if you can read this you're a genius. I doubt if that's true but you sure had to be a word decipher to make sense of the story. It was a huge disappointment! Stay away from the paperback version of this first volume. It's a mess!
