I read a lot of manga. A LOT. Rarely though do I want to become a fan of a series. I mean, there is a lot of drek manga you have to sift through to find something that resonates; something that stands out so well, that it startles you, and so finding this series was not only a surprise, but an unexpected delight in the story premise.

The story is fairly simple: A young girl in her first year of high school wants so badly to make friends and to fit in that she lies to them about her love life. She brags about having a boyfriend who is a bit perverted, and how cool and wonderful he is. Later, when she has time to think clearly, she realizes the trap she has made for herself, since in fact, she is single with almost no prospects of being otherwise. Desperate to save her new-found friends, she spots a nice young man who is kind and courteous to all the girls. She dashes up him and explains her situation, then she begs him on her knees to be her temporary boyfriend for awhile. He thinks about it awhile, and all the kindness he'd shown drained from his face. His eyes narrowed, his mouth took on a malicious grin, and he then tells her that he'll agree with her scheme if she turns around and barks sever and tells her that from this point on, she is his "dog".

In the days and weeks that follow, Erika is caught on an knife's edge between the harsh tasks Kyouya inflicts on her, and the danger of her lies being exposed to her friends. As time passes, she realizes his cynicism has reasons, and she sets out on the thorny trap-laden road to his heart. Kyouya, on the other hand, starts off believing that he's being used by yet another selfish young woman; the kind his life is already frustratingly full of. But despite how formidable his pride and crabbiness are, he begins to understand that maybe, just maybe, Erika really is sincere, and he begins to show little kindnesses to her, and to realize that she is actually beginning to grow on him.

I love the characters, and I really love the art. Unlike the usual manga storylines which have been hashed and rehashed, this one has the standard high school setting, but the devilishly handsome Kyouya takes it much farther than the usual "tsundere" characters, and shows his really irritable, crabby side every chance he gets. Meanwhile, Erika shows a great deal of common sense and has no trouble severing her deal when their relationship turns sour.

Ookami Shoujo to Kuro Ouji has fine expressive characters and I enjoy every chapter very very much. The anime is also fun, and I can highly recommend it - if you like your characters stirred up like a nest of cranky hornets. I do hope this series is released in English here, since I'm convinced that I must add this series to my bookshelves, ASAP!
